Conditions we may see-
Falls- We see older people who may be at risk of falling or have had a fall and complete multi-factorial falls assessments to identify and minimise risk factors. We work with carers and families to mitigate falls risks and work together as a team to ensure complex needs are met and a comprehensive exercise programme is in place. We support carers in identifying and reducing falls in care homes.
Illness- We help people who have recently been unwell or have been in hospital and aid their recovery back to full health. They may have had a recent urine infection and lost their strength, sustained an acute delirium (confusion) from an infection, or lost confidence after a period of immobility.
Respite care- We assist people back to their previous level of function and mobility to enable them to return home after a period of respite. We can help improve strength and function and facilitate the move back home. Our occupational therapists can assess your home environment and advise if any adaptations or equipment is required on returning home.
Post-surgery. We assist elderly residents with post-operative care such as a hip or knee replacement and progress their walking and balance with a suitable walking aid. We will continue to progress walking, balance and strength and progress exercise programmes as strength improves.
Neurological conditions- We see people for stroke rehabilitation, Parkinson’s physiotherapy, MS physiotherapy and more..
We will work with you, your family and carers to help optimise your function, improve your well-being, regain your strength, and maximise your independence. We can help to keep you motivated, active, and improve your overall well-being and quality of life in your care home. We are able to provide manual handling training with carers, prescribe exercise programmes, and we regularly work with carers and families to promote recovery and rehabilitation.
Staying for respite? No problem! Let us help you regain confidence and movement to allow you to return home safely. Falls are one of the greatest risks older residents face in care homes with the statistics showing that care home residents are 3 times more likely to have a fall than their peers living in the community. With expert intervention from specialist physiotherapists and OTs, many falls are preventable.
Our falls specialist physiotherapists from our experienced team provide a comprehensive multi-factorial falls assessment, taking into account individual risk factors. This may include muscle weakness, balance, gait defects, confidence, medication side effects, hazards, footwear to name a few.
Our expert physiotherapists and occupational therapists provide evidence-based intervention and exercise plans tailored to each individual to address areas of difficulties and concerns.
Falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury death with the majority of falls occurring in adults over 60. Older people are at highest risk of death or severe injury following a fall (WHO, 2001).
Physiotherapy intervention can significantly reduce the risk of falls and has been shown to reduce this risk by a third (CSP, 2014).
Older-people physiotherapists are able to identify areas of difficulty with movement, strength and balance and will provide a tailored exercise programme to suit each individual. It is important that these exercises are supervised and progressed regularly to ensure the best treatment outcomes are achieved.
Environmental assessment, mobility, balance and functional training are recommended by the World Health Organisation for falls prevention and management. Tolerance and overall strength and balance, your physiotherapist can help you to walk further and be safer on your feet.
We work collaboratively with care home staff, offering guidance and training to ensure ongoing falls prevention.

Physiotherapy can significantly improve the quality of life in older adults with arthritis.
You may have stiffness, swelling or pain surrounding one or more joints. Certain movements may have become more difficult and your walking and balance may be affected.
There are several types of arthritis with the main one being osteoarthritis. This is where the cartilage starts to roughen and break down, bony growths caused osteophytes can develop, and you may feel a grating sensation when you move the joint. Osteoarthritis can develop in any joint with the most common areas being the knees, hips, and hands.
There is no cure for arthritis and it can be managed with the right advice and exercise. Exercise is an important part of managing arthritis but sometimes it can be hard to know what exercise is right for you. Exercise and movement can help reduce your pain and symptoms while also improving muscle strength and reducing stiffness.
Your physiotherapist will assess your affected joint/s and surrounding muscle strength and flexibility as well as your walking and balance. They can provide a tailored exercise programme to help strengthen surrounding muscles and improve the capacity of the joint. Regular exercises can help to reduce pain and improve stiffness.
In older adults with osteoporosis, physiotherapy can significantly help by strengthening bones and muscles.
Osteoporosis is a condition where your bones lose strength and weaken making it more likely to fracture a bone with a minor injury. Osteoporosis is more common in older people and can be a cause of falls. Your physiotherapist will look at your movements, walking and strength and will devise a suitable strengthening exercise programme to help strengthening your muscles and bones preventing further deterioration.
Physiotherapy can have huge benefits in enhancing quality of life, improving mental well-being and minimising functional decline. We aim to keep you as strong as possible helping to prevent hospital admission and dependence on carers. Regular exercises are recommended by the NHS to help reduce the risk of major illness including heart disease, stroke, bowel and breast cancer, osteoarthritis, depression, dementia as well as reducing the risk of falls. It can also lower the risk of early death by 30%.
Our physios can help you remain mobile (or can help to improve mobility if moving is difficult), take you outside and progress outdoor mobility and movement. We can also complete exercises outside and try to make exercises as fun and engaging as possible. We will support you to improve your confidence, aiming to get you as fit and strong as we can.
We provide packages to care homes for weekly, fortnightly or monthly visits to support residents with regular input and reduce the risk of falls in the home.
