Sciatica
Assessment and treatment
Sciatica is a term to describe pain in the leg caused by irritation of a nerve root in the lower back. The most common cause is due to disc related changes, although anything that irritates the nerve root cause be a cause.
The irritated nerve can also produce various symptoms including burning pain, electric shock sensations, changes in sensation or pins and needles. Some people also experience a sensation of coldness or water running down the leg and can lose some muscle strength.
If you think you may have sciatica, your physiotherapist will carry out a physical examination to determine the source of symptoms and will be able to advise you how best to manage and treat your condition. There can be other conditions that can cause similar symptoms to sciatica, your physiotherapist will wish to provide a thorough assessment to help determine the correct diagnosis. If they have any concerns as to the cause of your symptoms they will advise you on the next steps.
Physiotherapy can effectively manage sciatica and help to reduce pain, improve mobility and movement and help to strengthen surrounding muscles. We may want to use some hands-on therapy to aid your recovery such as massage or mobilisations and will provide a personalised home rehabilitation programme for you to fit in with your daily routine.
