Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.
Christchurch is well served, and it would be dishonest to open any other way. The nearest emergency department is at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, run by University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust. It moved into the hospital's new BEACH building in 2025 and is open 24 hours a day, and planned hip and knee replacements are carried out there too. Closer to home, Christchurch Hospital on Fairmile Road runs a Day Hospital offering assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for older people, including falls, stroke and Parkinson's clinics.
So the honest question is: with all of that nearby, why would you need us?
Because the hospital is where the operation happens, and home is where the recovery happens. A hip replacement, a knee, a fractured wrist or hip — the surgery takes a morning. The rebuilding takes weeks, and almost all of it happens in your own house. A hospital in Bournemouth does nothing for you at week three, when you still cannot manage your own stairs and the exercise sheet is on the kitchen table.
Outpatient physiotherapy and the Day Hospital are the other half of it. Both are good, but both mean getting there — to Fairmile Road, or into Bournemouth — and parking, on a leg or a hip that is not ready for any of that. For a lot of older people the journey is harder than the treatment, and appointments get missed for exactly that reason.
NHS community therapy at home comes through the Community Therapy Team at Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust, which covers Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. It is a good service and it is in high demand, so there can be a wait.
Where there is council support, it comes through BCP Council's reablement service: a short period of intensive support at home, for up to six weeks. The council also offers occupational therapy assessments as a separate service. We continue the work after that, or from the start if reablement was never part of the picture, for as long as it's genuinely helping and alongside anything the NHS already has in place.

Why would I need a home physiotherapist when there's a hospital nearby?
Because the hospital is where the operation happens, and home is where the recovery happens. The Royal Bournemouth Hospital has a 24-hour emergency department and carries out planned hip and knee replacements, and Christchurch Hospital's Day Hospital offers rehabilitation for older people. Both are good. But a hip replacement takes a morning to do and weeks to rebuild — almost all of it in your own house. Getting to Fairmile Road or into Bournemouth and parking is, for many older people, harder than the treatment itself. We come to you instead, and build your programme around your actual stairs, your actual chair and your actual bathroom.
How much does a home physiotherapy visit cost in Christchurch?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. After a hip or knee replacement, a fracture or other surgery, we visit you at home in Christchurch and work through a programme built around your surgeon's protocol, alongside any NHS follow-up rather than instead of it. If BCP Council's reablement service has been involved, that support lasts up to six weeks — we often start where it finishes.

Christchurch has a 24-hour emergency department a few miles away in Bournemouth, and a Day Hospital for older people in the town itself. That is fortunate, and it is worth saying first.
It is also much older than England as a whole. Almost a third of people in Christchurch are aged 65 or over — 31.7 per cent against 18.4 per cent for England, and more than 15,000 people in all. Across the wider BCP Council area the figure is 21.6 per cent.
That is who a home visit is for. A fall at home, a new hip, a spell in hospital that leaves someone weaker than when they went in — and a family, often living some distance away, trying to arrange help quickly.
And running through all of it is the same point. An emergency department in Bournemouth does nothing for you at week three of a hip replacement, when the exercises are on the kitchen table and nobody has watched you try your own stairs. That is the bit we do.
