If you need inpatient rehabilitation after a stroke, you may well get it two miles from your front door rather than in Southampton.
That makes Lymington's gap a different shape from most. It isn't the absence of NHS rehabilitation — it's what happens when that rehabilitation ends. Hampshire County Council's reablement service is capped at six weeks, and recovery after a stroke or a fracture usually runs longer than that. Add villages scattered across forest lanes with limited bus links, and continuing outpatient therapy becomes a journey many people cannot yet make. We pick up from there, at home, working alongside NHS and council support rather than in place of it.

Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.
Lymington is better placed than most towns of its size. Lymington New Forest Hospital runs an urgent treatment centre from 8am to 9pm every day, a stroke rehabilitation unit, a medical assessment unit and a diagnostic centre with CT, MRI and X-ray, under Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Major surgery and emergency admissions go to University Hospital Southampton, around eighteen miles up the road, but a good deal of rehabilitation happens here in town.
Once you're home, short-term support usually comes through Hampshire County Council's reablement service, an intensive period of help designed to get you back on your feet. Their reablement teams include occupational therapists as well as care staff. It's free, it's time-limited — a maximum of six weeks, sometimes less — and it works well for many people.
The difficulty comes when that support ends but recovery hasn't finished. Progress after a stroke, a fracture or a long admission often continues for months, and six weeks rarely covers it. Getting to outpatient appointments is its own obstacle once you're back home in Boldre or South Baddesley without a car you can yet drive. That's the point at which most of our Lymington clients come to us.

We work alongside NHS rehabilitation rather than replacing it. Lymington New Forest Hospital has a stroke rehabilitation unit and outpatient therapy services, and many of our clients have already been through them. Where we help is afterwards — when NHS input has finished but recovery hasn't, when Hampshire's six-week reablement period ends before you're ready, or when getting in from Sway or Boldre for each appointment isn't yet realistic. If you are currently under NHS care, tell us and we'll make sure what we do complements it.
