Once you're home, short-term support usually comes through Dorset Council's reablement service, an intensive period of help designed to get you back on your feet, with community therapy provided by Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust. It is time-limited — typically up to six weeks — and for many people it does the job.
The difficulty comes when that support ends but recovery hasn't finished. Progress after a stroke, a fracture or a long admission often continues for months, and six weeks rarely covers it. That's the point at which most of our Ferndown clients come to us.
