Poole is well served, and it would be dishonest to open any other way. Poole Hospital sits in the middle of the town on Longfleet Road, and it is being invested in rather than run down — ten new operating theatres, a new endoscopy centre, and a growing role as University Hospitals Dorset's main site for planned surgery. Cancer treatment, chemotherapy and radiotherapy remain at Poole. Very few towns of this size have that on their doorstep.

The trust is separating emergency and planned care across its two main sites, with emergency care concentrating at the Royal Bournemouth. It is worth knowing that most joint replacements for this area are already carried out at the Royal Bournemouth, even though your clinics and follow-up may well be at Poole. People are often surprised by that when the letter arrives.

So the honest question is: if the hospital is here, why would you need us?

Because the hospital is where the operation happens, and home is where the recovery happens. A hip replacement, a knee, a shoulder repair, a fractured wrist — the surgery takes a morning. The rebuilding takes weeks, and almost all of it happens in your own house. A hospital ten minutes away does nothing for you at week three, when you still cannot manage your own stairs and the exercise sheet is on the kitchen table.

Outpatient physiotherapy is the other half of it. It exists, and it is good, but it means getting to the hospital — driving, parking, or a bus, on a leg or a shoulder that is not ready for any of that. For a lot of people the journey is harder than the treatment, and appointments get missed for exactly that reason.

Community therapy across Poole is provided by Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust, and rehabilitation beds sit at Christchurch Hospital. Council support comes through BCP Council's short term care, reablement and occupational therapy at home service. It is free, it genuinely includes occupational therapists, and it runs for up to six weeks. We continue the work after that, or from the start if reablement was never part of the picture, for as long as it is genuinely helping and alongside anything the NHS already has in place.

Poole is an old town in the demographic sense as well as the historic one. Across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, around 87,000 people — roughly 22 per cent of residents — are aged 65 or over, against 18.4 per cent for England as a whole. Over the last decade that group grew by around 12 per cent while the population as a whole grew by under 6 per cent. The ageing is not a forecast here. It has already happened.

The consequence shows up in one particularly blunt figure. Across BCP there are 578 hip fractures for every 100,000 people aged 65 and over — one of the highest rates in the South West. Behind almost every one of those is a fall, an ambulance, an operation, and then a long stretch at home trying to get walking again.

That last stretch is the part that is under-served, and it is the part we do. NHS rehabilitation after a fracture is real and it is good, but it is time-limited, and BCP Council's reablement service is capped at six weeks by design. Recovery from a broken hip in your seventies is not a six-week job. People are very often discharged from support while still holding onto the furniture.

The other thing about a fall is what it does to confidence. People stop using the stairs. They stop going out on their own. They sit more, which makes them weaker, which makes the next fall more likely. Nobody comes to the house to notice that happening. Treating someone at home means we see the actual stairs, the actual chair they are struggling out of, and the rug in the hall that caused the whole thing.

Poole also has genuine advantages, and we should say so. The hospital is in the town, it is being expanded rather than reduced, and cancer services stayed here. This is not a place the NHS has walked away from. But the strongest hospital in the world still sends you home, and home is where the work gets done.
