Where NHS and Council Support Ends in Hampshire — We Begin

Most people find us at the same point. The operation went fine, the ward was good, the discharge team came out — and then, six weeks later, it all stops.

Hampshire County Council's reablement service is genuinely useful. It is free, it includes occupational therapists as well as physiotherapists and carers, and it is designed to get you back on your feet after a hospital stay or a fall. But it is capped at six weeks. For a hip replacement, a stroke, or a serious loss of confidence after a fall, six weeks is often where the recovery is just getting going.

Beyond that, NHS care in Hampshire is spread across four trusts, and which one you deal with depends on where you live. University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust covers Southampton and much of the New Forest. Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust covers Winchester, Basingstoke and Andover. Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust covers Portsmouth, Fareham, Havant and the east. Community services across the county are run by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, formed on 1 October 2024 when Southern Health and Solent NHS Trust merged.

Wherever you sit in that map, the pattern is the same: the hospital does the operation, the council does six weeks, and the rest of the recovery happens at home.

Who provides home physiotherapy in Hampshire?
Salveo Forma provides HCPC-registered home physiotherapy and occupational therapy across nearly forty towns and villages in Hampshire — including Southampton, Winchester, Portsmouth, Fareham, Lymington, Petersfield and Alton. Our chartered therapists come to you, whether that is your home, care home or nursing home. Same-week appointments are available across the county.
How much does home physiotherapy cost in Hampshire?
An initial assessment is £110 and follow-up appointments start from £55. Occupational therapy costs the same as physiotherapy. Our full price list is published on our website. Do I need a GP referral for home physiotherapy in Hampshire?
No. You can contact Salveo Forma directly without a GP referral. We also welcome referrals from GPs, hospital consultants, case managers and insurers, but a referral is never a requirement.

What happens when Hampshire County Council reablement ends?
Hampshire County Council's reablement service is free, includes occupational therapists, and is capped at six weeks. For many people that is not long enough — particularly after a hip or knee replacement, a stroke, or a fall that has knocked their confidence. We pick up where it stops, or from the start if reablement was never offered, and we work alongside any NHS follow-up you already have rather than duplicating it.
How quickly can I get an appointment in Hampshire?
We aim to offer same-week appointments across Hampshire. For urgent cases — a hospital discharge, a recent fall, or a sudden change in mobility — we can often arrange a visit within 48 hours. Availability varies by area and therapist, so call and we will tell you honestly what we can do.
Are your therapists qualified and registered?
Yes. All Salveo Forma physiotherapists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and are members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). Our occupational therapists are HCPC-registered and members of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT). Every therapist is Enhanced DBS-checked.
What happens during a first home visit?
Your therapist carries out a full assessment in your own home, which usually takes 45 to 60 minutes. They discuss your medical history and current concerns, then assess your movement, strength, balance and function. By the end of the visit you will have a treatment plan built around your home and your goals.
Do you visit care homes and nursing homes in Hampshire?
Yes. Our physiotherapists and occupational therapists visit care homes and nursing homes across Hampshire regularly. We work with residents, families and care staff to maintain mobility, reduce falls risk and support independence. Call us to discuss regular provision for your home.
What is the difference between physiotherapy and occupational therapy?
Physiotherapy rebuilds strength, balance and movement. Occupational therapy looks at the practical business of daily life — getting in and out of a chair, managing stairs, washing and dressing safely. The two overlap constantly, and most people are not sure which they need.
