Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.
Bath is well served, and it would be dishonest to open any other way. The Royal United Hospital at Combe Park, run by Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, has an emergency department open 24 hours a day, with an urgent treatment centre beside it open from 8am to 10pm every day. Since May 2025, planned hip and knee replacements for the area have also been carried out at the Sulis Orthopaedic Centre near Peasedown St John, run jointly by the RUH and Sulis Hospital Bath.
So the honest question is: with all of that nearby, why would you need us?
Because the hospital is where the operation happens, and home is where the recovery happens. A hip replacement, a knee, a fractured wrist or hip — the surgery takes a morning. The rebuilding takes weeks, and almost all of it happens in your own house. A hospital at Combe Park does nothing for you at week three, when you still cannot manage your own stairs and the exercise sheet is on the kitchen table.
Outpatient physiotherapy is the other half of it. It exists, and it is good, but it means getting there — out to Combe Park, or down to Peasedown — and parking, on a leg or a hip that is not ready for any of that. The RUH itself says parking on site is limited and a space cannot be guaranteed at busy times. In a city of hills and steps, the journey is often harder than the treatment for older people, and appointments get missed for exactly that reason.
NHS community health services in Bath and North East Somerset are run by HCRG Care Group under the name BSW Community Health. Since April 2026 there has been a single phone number for its services, and you can refer yourself without going through your GP.
Where there is council support, it comes through Bath and North East Somerset Council's reablement service: a short period of intensive therapy and support at home, funded by the NHS and the council, for up to six weeks. We continue the work after that, or from the start if reablement was never part of the picture, for as long as it's genuinely helping and alongside anything the NHS already has in place.

Why would I need a home physiotherapist when the RUH is in Bath?
Because the hospital is where the treatment starts, and home is where the recovery happens. The Royal United Hospital has a 24-hour emergency department and an urgent treatment centre, and the Sulis Orthopaedic Centre carries out planned hip and knee replacements. Both are good. But a hip replacement takes a morning to do and weeks to rebuild — almost all of it in your own house. Getting to an outpatient appointment and parking is, for many older people, harder than the treatment itself. We come to you instead, and build your programme around your actual stairs, your actual chair and your actual bathroom.
How much does a home physiotherapy visit cost in Bath?
An initial assessment is £110 for 60 or more minutes, including treatment, and follow-up visits start at £55 for 30 minutes. A 45-minute follow-up is £82.50 and 60 minutes is £110. There are no packages and no block bookings, and the first phone conversation is free.
Can you help after an operation at the RUH or the Sulis Orthopaedic Centre?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. After a hip or knee replacement, a fracture or other surgery, we visit you at home in Bath and work through a programme built around your surgeon's protocol, alongside any NHS follow-up rather than instead of it. If the council's reablement service has been involved, that support lasts up to six weeks — we often start where it finishes.
Can physiotherapy help after a fall in Bath?

Bath has a major hospital with a 24-hour emergency department on the edge of the city, and a new orthopaedic centre a few miles away. That is fortunate, and it is worth saying first.
Bath is younger than most places we cover, but more than 15,000 people in the city are aged 65 or over, and across Bath and North East Somerset their numbers grew by 17.5 per cent between the last two censuses. At the last count, 13.6 per cent of households in the area were one person aged 66 or over, living alone. And Bath asks more of its older residents than most cities: steep streets, steps, and tall houses where the bathroom can be two floors from the kitchen.
That is who a home visit is for. A fall at home, a new hip, a spell in hospital that leaves someone weaker than when they went in — and a family, often living some distance away, trying to arrange help quickly.
And running through all of it is the same point. An emergency department at Combe Park does nothing for you at week three of a hip replacement, when the exercises are on the kitchen table and nobody has watched you try your own stairs. That is the bit we do.
