Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.
Most people in Wimborne who need hospital treatment are seen at Poole Hospital or the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, both run by University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust. Since spring 2025 emergency care has been centred on the Bournemouth site and planned surgery on the Poole site, so which hospital you end up at now depends largely on why you are going. Closer to home, Victoria Hospital on Victoria Road has inpatient beds, a minor injuries unit and its own physiotherapy department — but that physiotherapy department is an outpatient one, which means travelling to it and back.
Once you're home, short-term support usually comes through Dorset Council's reablement service, an intensive period of help designed to get you back on your feet, with community therapy provided by Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust's integrated community rehabilitation team. It's time-limited — typically up to six weeks — and it works well for many people.
The difficulty comes when that support ends but recovery hasn't finished. Progress after a stroke, a fracture or a long admission often continues for months, and six weeks rarely covers it. That's the point at which most of our Wimborne clients come to us.
