There is no hospital in Waterlooville. Waterlooville Health Centre on Dryden Close hosts GP services and a range of community clinics, but it is not a hospital and has no minor injuries unit. For a town of more than 37,000 people, that is a striking gap.
Queen Alexandra Hospital at Cosham, run by Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, is the A&E and the surgical site for this area. It is under four miles away, which sounds close until you remember it sits on the slope of Portsdown Hill and every journey there crosses the ridge. The nearest urgent treatment centre is further still — Petersfield Hospital, eleven miles north, open 8am to 8pm.
Once you're home, short-term support usually comes through Hampshire County Council's reablement service. It's free, the teams include occupational therapists as well as care staff, and it's capped at six weeks — sometimes less, depending on your situation.
The difficulty comes when that support ends but recovery hasn't finished. Progress after a stroke, a fracture or a long admission often continues for months, and six weeks rarely covers it. That's the point at which most people call us. We continue the work at home, for as long as it's genuinely helping, and we work alongside any NHS or council support already in place rather than in place of it.

Waterlooville was a village of about 1,250 people in 1931. Almost everything you can see today went up in the fifties and sixties, and a great many of the people who bought those houses new are still living in them. That history shows up in the numbers: more than a quarter of households here contain nobody under 66 at all, well above the England figure of 22 per cent, and 22.6 per cent of residents are over 65. This is a town that grew up all at once, and is growing old the same way.
What it doesn't have is anywhere local to be treated. For 37,000 people there is no hospital, no minor injuries unit and no urgent treatment centre — and no railway station either. Queen Alexandra is under four miles off but sits on the far side of Portsdown Hill, and the nearest urgent treatment centre is eleven miles away at Petersfield. Most people here do have a car, and the buses to QA are decent. The problem isn't the distance. It's that a twice-weekly outpatient appointment is a real undertaking when you're eighty-two, recovering from a fracture, and there's nobody in the house to drive you.
We fill the gap that opens after the ward has discharged you and the reablement team has finished, when there is still real recovery left to do. We come to the house, for as long as it's genuinely helping, and we work around whatever NHS or council support you already have rather than duplicating it.
