Why Home Visits Make Sense in Hedge End

Hedge End is a town built around people who drive. That works well — right up until the day it doesn't.

None

By the usual measures Hedge End looks like a town with no problem to solve. Just over 17 per cent of residents are aged 65 or over, a little below the England average. Fewer than one household in twelve is without a car, against nearly one in four nationally. There's a railway station, and buses run to Moorgreen, to Fareham and into Southampton. On paper, everybody can get everywhere.

The numbers that matter are the ones underneath. Hedge End is a big town — more than 23,000 people — so 17 per cent still comes to 3,833 residents aged 65 or over, of whom 1,049 live on their own and 1,942 households contain nobody under 66. A town organised around driving works beautifully until you are the person who has stopped driving, and in Hedge End that puts you in a minority in your own street. The infrastructure everyone else relies on quietly stops applying to you.

Where it bites is urgent and follow-up care. There is no hospital, minor injuries unit or urgent treatment centre anywhere in Eastleigh borough — a borough of 136,000 people. Moorgreen at West End is two miles away but is a base for community and mental health teams rather than a general hospital. Southampton General, the nearest A&E and the surgical site for most of this area, is around eight and a half miles off with no direct bus. And a town of 23,000 has a single GP surgery site.

After a discharge, most short-term support comes through Hampshire County Council's reablement service, which is free, includes occupational therapists as well as care staff, and is capped at six weeks. It does a good job within those six weeks. The difficulty is month three, when the reablement team has finished and recovery has not — and continuing means a hospital appointment you now need someone else to drive you to. That's the point at which most of our Hedge End clients call us.

After a Hospital Stay in Hedge End

Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.

Hedge End has no hospital, and nor does anywhere else in Eastleigh borough. The nearest hospital of any kind is Moorgreen at West End, about two miles away, but it is a base for community and mental health teams under Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust rather than a general hospital. Fareham Community Hospital at Sarisbury Green is roughly four miles off and has neither an A&E nor a minor injuries unit.

Surgery and emergency admissions mean Southampton General, about eight and a half miles away and part of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, which is also the major trauma centre for the whole of Wessex. There is no direct bus from Hedge End to the General — the journey takes two buses and around an hour, changing in Southampton city centre.

Once you're home, short-term support usually comes through Hampshire County Council's reablement service. It's free, the teams include occupational therapists as well as care staff, and it works well for a great many people. It is also capped at six weeks, and it has firm boundaries — reablement workers cannot carry out nursing procedures, and cannot help with medication that has been taken out of its original packaging.

The difficulty comes when that support ends but recovery hasn't finished. Progress after a stroke, a fracture or a long admission often continues for months, and six weeks rarely covers it. We continue the work at home, for as long as it's genuinely helping, and we work alongside any NHS or council support already in place rather than in place of it. If you're unsure whether it's too soon or too late to start, call us and we'll tell you honestly.

Living Independently at Home

We Help You Live Independently With Confidence, Meaning & Purpose

Whether you're rebuilding strength after a hip replacement, regaining confidence following a fall, or managing life with a stroke or neurological condition — getting to a clinic isn't always possible. We remove that barrier entirely.

Our physiotherapists and occupational therapists come to you, delivering expert one-to-one treatment in your home or care home. No difficult journeys. No waiting rooms. Just focused, specialist care at a time and pace that works for you.

We treat you as a whole person — not just your symptoms.

We take the time to understand your life, your challenges, and what independence means to you. Then we build a treatment plan around that. As a small, close-knit team, we also work alongside your family and carers, making sure everyone involved in your care feels supported, informed and part of the process.

Our clinicians each hold specialist areas of expertise, and we carefully match every patient with the therapist best suited to their condition and goals. From the very first visit, you're in the right hands.

FAQs

Do you provide home physiotherapy in Hedge End?

Yes. Salveo Forma provides home physiotherapy and occupational therapy throughout Hedge End and the surrounding SO30 area, with HCPC-registered clinicians visiting you in your own home, care home or nursing home. No GP referral is needed — call 07384 590177 to arrange a visit. We cover Grange Park, Dowd's Farm, Wildern, Shamblehurst, Kings Copse and Freegrounds.

How much does a home physiotherapy visit cost in Hedge End?

A comprehensive initial assessment including treatment is £110 for 60 minutes or more. Follow-up visits are £55 for 30 minutes, £82.50 for 45 minutes and £110 for 60 minutes. Occupational therapy costs exactly the same as physiotherapy. Most Hedge End visits carry no travel charge.

Can I use private health insurance or a personal budget?

Yes. We work with BUPA, WPA and all major insurers, and we can accept payment from a council personal budget or Direct Payment, or from NHS Continuing Healthcare funding you already hold. Cover varies by policy and by council, so check what yours includes first — our guide to paying for care explains what to ask.

Do I need a GP referral for a home visit in Hedge End?

No. You can contact us directly on 07384 590177 and we'll arrange an appointment. We also accept referrals from GPs, hospital consultants and insurers, but most people come to us themselves.

Is there a hospital in Hedge End?

No. There is no hospital in Hedge End and no minor injuries unit or urgent treatment centre anywhere in Eastleigh borough. The nearest hospital of any kind is Moorgreen at West End, roughly two miles away, which is a base for community and mental health teams rather than a general hospital. The nearest A&E is Southampton General at around eight and a half miles, and there is no direct bus to it.

How does this work alongside NHS rehabilitation and Hampshire's reablement service?

We work alongside NHS and council support rather than replacing it. Hampshire County Council's reablement service is free, includes occupational therapists, and runs for a maximum of six weeks after a hospital discharge. Most of our Hedge End clients come to us once that has finished but recovery is still going on, or when getting to Southampton for outpatient appointments twice a week is no longer realistic. If you are currently under NHS care, tell us and we'll make sure what we do complements it.

How quickly can someone visit me in Hedge End?

We aim to offer same-week appointments wherever possible. Availability does vary by area and by therapist, so we work with you to find a time that fits around your commitments. Call 07384 590177 and we'll tell you honestly what we can do.
