Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.
There is no hospital in Horndean or Cowplain, and no minor injuries unit or urgent treatment centre in either. What there is, all strung along London Road, is three GP practices — Horndean Surgery, The Village Surgery and Oaks Healthcare. For everyday care that works well. For anything more, you travel.
Queen Alexandra Hospital at Cosham, run by Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, is the A&E and the surgical site for this part of Hampshire, about six miles down the A3(M). The nearest urgent treatment centre is in the other direction — Petersfield Hospital, roughly ten miles north, open 8am to 8pm every day.
Once you're home, short-term support comes through Hampshire County Council's reablement service. Horndean sits in East Hampshire district and Cowplain in Havant borough, but adult social care comes from the county council for both, so it makes no practical difference which side of the boundary your house is on. It's free, the teams include occupational therapists as well as care staff, and it's capped at six weeks.
The difficulty comes when that support ends but recovery hasn't finished. Progress after a stroke, a fracture or a long admission often continues for months, and six weeks rarely covers it. That's the point at which most people call us. We continue the work at home, for as long as it's genuinely helping, and we work alongside any NHS or council support already in place rather than in place of it.

Is there a hospital in Horndean or Cowplain?
No. Neither Horndean nor Cowplain has a hospital, a minor injuries unit or an urgent treatment centre. There are three GP practices along London Road — Horndean Surgery, The Village Surgery and Oaks Healthcare. The nearest A&E is Queen Alexandra Hospital at Cosham, about six miles south, and the nearest urgent treatment centre is Petersfield Hospital, roughly ten miles north.
Horndean is in East Hampshire and Cowplain is in Havant borough — does that change anything?
Not for adult social care. Hampshire County Council provides reablement and adult social care for both, so the district boundary running through the middle of London Road makes no practical difference to the support you can get. Reablement is free, includes occupational therapists, and runs for a maximum of six weeks after a hospital discharge. We come in afterwards, when that has finished but recovery is still going on.

Most families who call us here are in one of two situations. Either somebody has come home from hospital and the council's six weeks have run out before they were ready — or a fall has taken their confidence, and the idea of getting to an appointment and back is doing more harm than the appointment would do good.
Horndean and Cowplain run into one another along London Road with no real break between them, and together they hold around 26,000 people. A quarter of Horndean is now aged 65 or over — well above the England average of 18.4 per cent. This was a coaching stop on the road to Portsmouth long before it was a commuter town, and Gales brewed beer behind the Ship and Bell from 1847 until Fuller's closed the place in 2006. The brewery is flats now. A lot of people here have watched the village change around them without ever moving house.
What hasn't arrived, for all that growth, is anywhere local to be treated. Three GP surgeries along London Road, and then nothing — no hospital, no minor injuries unit, no urgent treatment centre, and no railway station either; the nearest is Rowlands Castle, a couple of miles off. Queen Alexandra is six miles down the A3(M) and the number 8 bus does run there directly, which helps. But a twice-weekly outpatient appointment is a genuine undertaking when you're recovering from a fracture and there's nobody in the house to drive you.
We fill the gap that opens after the ward has discharged you and the reablement team has finished, when there is still real recovery left to do. We come to the house, for as long as it's genuinely helping, and we work around whatever NHS or council support you already have rather than duplicating it.
