Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.
Bordon has a hospital, but not the one it used to have. Chase Community Hospital on Conde Way, run by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, once had a 24-bed inpatient ward with its own physiotherapy and occupational therapy, a day centre and an X-ray machine. The ward closed and has not reopened, and the day centre and X-ray went with it. What remains on site is community physiotherapy and occupational therapy by GP referral, along with immunisation, catheter and oxygen clinics. A new Health Hub has been promised as part of the town's regeneration, but it has not been built yet.
So for anything significant you travel. The nearest A&E is the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, about eighteen miles north and run by Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. For urgent but not emergency care there are two urgent treatment centres about ten miles away in opposite directions — Petersfield, open 8am to 8pm daily, and Haslemere, open 8am to 5pm.
The practical consequence is the same for a great many people here: you have your operation in Guildford, and then you come home to a town with no rehabilitation bed in it. A hip replacement, a knee, a shoulder repair, a fracture — the surgery is the short part. The rebuilding takes weeks, and it happens at home whether anyone has arranged for it or not.
Where there is council support it comes through Hampshire County Council's reablement service — free, including occupational therapists, and capped at six weeks. We continue the work after that, or from the start if reablement was never part of the picture, for as long as it's genuinely helping and alongside anything the NHS already has in place.
The same rate whether you see a physiotherapist or an occupational therapist. Most visits here carry no travel charge at all.

Yes, and it's a large part of what we do here. After a hip or knee replacement, a shoulder repair, spinal surgery or a fracture, the rebuilding takes weeks and happens at home. We visit you there, usually within a few days of you asking, and work through a programme built around your surgeon's protocol and your own home — your stairs, your chair, your bathroom. You do not need a referral and you do not need to wait for one.
How much does a home physiotherapy visit cost in Bordon?
A comprehensive initial assessment including treatment is £110 for 60 minutes or more. Follow-up visits are £55 for 30 minutes, £82.50 for 45 minutes and £110 for 60 minutes. Occupational therapy costs exactly the same as physiotherapy. Most visits here carry no travel charge.
Is there still a hospital in Bordon?
Chase Community Hospital on Conde Way is still open, but it no longer has an inpatient ward — the 24-bed ward closed and has not reopened, and the day centre and X-ray service went with it. It currently provides community physiotherapy and occupational therapy by GP referral, along with immunisation, catheter and oxygen clinics, and an independent eye hospital operates from the site. There is no A&E, minor injuries unit or urgent treatment centre in the town. The nearest A&E is the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, about eighteen miles away.
What's the difference between physiotherapy and occupational therapy?
Physiotherapy rebuilds strength, balance and movement; occupational therapy looks at the practical business of daily life. The two overlap constantly — a physiotherapist works on the strength needed to get up the stairs, while an occupational therapist looks at whether a rail in the right place would make it safer. I'm a veteran — is there anything specific for me?
Not through us specifically, and it's worth being straight about that. Op COURAGE is the NHS veterans' service and it is excellent, but it covers mental health rather than physical rehabilitation — in Hampshire you can reach it on 0300 365 2000, option 4. For the physical side, there is no dedicated local pathway. A lot of people who served carry knees, backs and shoulders that have taken decades of load, and we treat exactly that: assessment at home, a programme you can actually keep to, and no waiting list.
Do I need a GP referral for a home visit in Bordon?

Bordon is not like the other towns we cover, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. The Army left in 2015 after more than a century, and what has grown in its place is a young town — three and a half thousand new homes going up, a new secondary school, a population heading from fourteen thousand towards twenty-three. The largest single age group here is people in their early thirties.
So the people who call us from Bordon itself are usually not arranging care for a parent. They are recovering from an operation, or a fracture, or an injury that hasn't settled — and they had the surgery in Guildford, eighteen miles away, because there is nowhere nearer. The ward at Chase Community Hospital, which once had twenty-four beds and its own physiotherapists, closed and never reopened.
The villages around the town are a different story again. Headley is 22 per cent over 65, Lindford nearly 21, and the same two GP surgeries serve all of it. So we do both here: post-operative and musculoskeletal rehabilitation in the town, and falls, balance and long-term condition work for older adults in Headley, Headley Down, Lindford and Kingsley.
What links the two is straightforward. Whatever brought you to needing physiotherapy, the recovery happens at home, over weeks, and nobody local is coming to do it with you. We come to the house, for as long as it's genuinely helping, and we work around whatever NHS or council support you already have rather than duplicating it.
