Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.
Lilliput is well served, and it would be dishonest to open any other way. Poole Hospital, run by University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, currently has a 24-hour emergency department, and so does the Royal Bournemouth Hospital on Castle Lane East, in its new BEACH building. The trust plans to move emergency care from Poole to the Royal Bournemouth, with an urgent treatment centre staying at Poole. Both hospitals have urgent treatment centres, open from 8am to midnight every day, and planned hip and knee replacements are carried out at both.
So the honest question is: with all of that nearby, why would you need us?
Because the hospital is where the operation happens, and home is where the recovery happens. A hip replacement, a knee, a fractured wrist or hip — the surgery takes a morning. The rebuilding takes weeks, and almost all of it happens in your own house. A hospital in Poole or Bournemouth does nothing for you at week three, when you still cannot manage your own stairs and the exercise sheet is on the kitchen table.
Outpatient physiotherapy is the other half of it. It exists, and it is good, but it means getting there — into Poole, or across to Castle Lane East — and parking, on a leg or a hip that is not ready for any of that. For a lot of older people the journey is harder than the treatment, and appointments get missed for exactly that reason.
NHS community therapy at home comes through the Community Therapy Team at Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust, which covers Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. It is for adults registered with a GP in the area who are medically stable, and you can refer yourself.
Where there is council support, it comes through BCP Council's reablement service: a short period of intensive support at home, for up to six weeks. The council also offers occupational therapy assessments at home. We continue the work after that, or from the start if reablement was never part of the picture, for as long as it's genuinely helping and alongside anything the NHS already has in place.

Why would I need a home physiotherapist when there are hospitals so close?
Because the hospital is where the treatment starts, and home is where the recovery happens. Poole Hospital and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital both have emergency departments and carry out planned hip and knee replacements, and they are good hospitals. But a hip replacement takes a morning to do and weeks to rebuild — almost all of it in your own house. Getting to an outpatient appointment and parking is, for many older people, harder than the treatment itself. We come to you instead, and build your programme around your actual stairs, your actual chair and your actual bathroom.

Lilliput has two major hospitals within reach, in Poole and Bournemouth. That is fortunate, and it is worth saying first.
It is also much older than England as a whole. In the Canford Cliffs ward, which includes Lilliput, 44.0 per cent of people are aged 65 or over, against 18.4 per cent for England, and across the BCP Council area the figure is 21.6 per cent.
That is who a home visit is for. A fall at home, a new hip, a spell in hospital that leaves someone weaker than when they went in — and a family, often living some distance away, trying to arrange help quickly.
