Yeovil is a working town, and that shapes what we see here. Around 3,300 people work at the Leonardo helicopter site alone, and thousands more in manufacturing, logistics, care and construction across the town. Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.
Yeovil is unusual among the towns we cover, and we should say so straight away. Most of our pages are about what a town has lost. Yeovil has not lost it. Yeovil District Hospital has a full emergency department, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with an urgent treatment centre next door open 9am to 9pm. There is no long drive to A&E from here. There is no shut-on-a-Friday minor injuries unit.
One thing worth knowing: the hospital is now run by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. The old Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust merged into it on 1 April 2023, so you may still see the former name on older letters and websites. It is the same hospital.
So the honest question is: if the hospital is here, why would you need us?
Because the hospital is where the operation happens, and home is where the recovery happens. A hip replacement, a knee, a shoulder repair, a fracture — the surgery takes a morning. The rebuilding takes weeks, and almost all of it happens in your own house. Having an A&E five minutes away does nothing for you at week three, when you still cannot get up your own stairs and the exercise sheet is on the kitchen table.
Outpatient physiotherapy is the other half of it. It exists, and it is good, but it means getting to the hospital — driving, parking, or a bus, on a leg or a shoulder that is not ready for any of that. For a lot of people the journey is harder than the treatment, and appointments get missed for exactly that reason.
Where there is council support it comes through Somerset Council's intermediate care and Discharge to Assess service, part of its Home First approach. It is free, it includes occupational therapists, and it is capped at six weeks. We continue the work after that, or from the start if intermediate care was never part of the picture, for as long as it's genuinely helping and alongside anything the NHS already has in place.

Why would I need a home physiotherapist when Yeovil has a hospital?
Because the hospital is where the operation happens, and home is where the recovery happens. Yeovil District Hospital has a full 24-hour A&E and outpatient physiotherapy, and both are good. But an operation takes a morning and the rebuilding takes weeks, almost all of it in your own house. Outpatient appointments also mean getting to the hospital — driving, parking or a bus — on a leg or shoulder that is not ready for it. We come to you instead, and we build your programme around your actual stairs, your actual chair and your actual bathroom.
How much does a home physiotherapy visit cost in Yeovil?
A comprehensive initial assessment including treatment is £110 for 60 minutes or more. Follow-up visits are £55 for 30 minutes, £82.50 for 45 minutes and £110 for 60 minutes. Most visits in and around Yeovil carry no travel charge. Travel beyond a 5-mile radius is £1.50 per mile and always agreed before your first visit.
Can you help after an operation at Yeovil District Hospital?
Yes, and it's a large part of what we do here. After a hip or knee replacement, a shoulder repair, spinal surgery or a fracture, we visit you at home — usually within a few days of you asking — and work through a programme built around your surgeon's protocol. You do not need a referral and you do not need to wait for one. We work alongside any NHS follow-up you already have rather than duplicating it.
Can you work around my shifts?
Yes. Yeovil is a working town and a lot of the people we see are still in a job, or trying to get back to one. Yeovil is not an old town, and we are not going to pretend it is. Just under 19 per cent of people here are aged 65 or over, against 18.4 per cent for England as a whole. That is a rounding difference, not a story. Sherborne, ten minutes up the road, is 33.3 per cent. Yeovil is simply not that kind of place.
What Yeovil is, is a working town. Around 3,300 people work at the Leonardo helicopter site, which is the largest manufacturer in Somerset, and in early 2026 a £1 billion Ministry of Defence contract confirmed Yeovil as the company's global centre for military helicopter production. Thousands more work in logistics, construction, care and retail across the town. That is manual work and shift work, and backs, shoulders and knees take the brunt of it.
So a lot of the people who call us from Yeovil are not arranging care for a parent. They are in their forties or fifties, they have had a shoulder repaired or a disc go, and they want to know how quickly they can get back to work. We see that, and we work around shifts to do it.
The other half is the villages. West Coker, Montacute, Tintinhull, Ilchester, Queen Camel, Mudford — small places with thin bus services, where getting to a hospital appointment can take most of a day. For older residents out there, and for anyone just home from a ward, that journey is often the thing that stops treatment happening at all.
And running through both is the same point. Yeovil has the hospital, and that is genuinely fortunate. But an A&E five minutes away does nothing for you at week three of a knee replacement, when the exercises are on the kitchen table and nobody has watched you try your own stairs. That is the bit we do.
