Wincanton is the better-served of the two, and it is worth saying so. The town has a community hospital, on Dancing Lane, which most people here still call Verrington. It has inpatient beds and outpatient clinics, and plenty of towns this size lost theirs years ago.
But a hospital bed and a clinic appointment are not the same as someone coming to the house. The work we do here is falls and balance, rebuilding strength after a spell on a ward, and getting people moving again after a hip or knee replacement, a shoulder repair or a fracture. We also treat back and joint pain, Parkinson's disease, stroke recovery and rheumatological conditions.

Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.
Wincanton is luckier than most towns its size, and we should say so before anything else. Wincanton Community Hospital on Dancing Lane — still Verrington to almost everyone here — is run by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and provides inpatient beds and outpatient clinics. A great many market towns lost exactly this and never got it back.
What the town does not have is a front door for anything urgent. Somerset NHS Foundation Trust runs seven urgent treatment centres — at Frome, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Chard, Bridgwater, Minehead and Yeovil — plus one minor injuries unit at Burnham-on-Sea. Wincanton is not among them, and neither is Templecombe. For a cut, a sprain or a suspected fracture you are driving to Yeovil, Shepton Mallet or Frome, and opening hours do vary, so it is worth checking 111 online first.
There is no A&E either. The nearest is Yeovil District Hospital, to the south-west, which has a 24-hour emergency department and an urgent treatment centre alongside it.
The A303 runs right past the town, which is excellent for getting away and no use at all for getting seen. Your operation happens in Yeovil, and then you come home. A hip replacement, a knee, a shoulder repair, a fracture after a fall — the surgery is the short part. The rebuilding takes weeks, and it happens at home whether anyone has arranged for it or not. Outpatient physiotherapy exists, but it still means getting yourself there and back, repeatedly, on a leg that is not ready for it.
Where there is council support it comes through Somerset Council's intermediate care and Discharge to Assess service, part of its Home First approach. It is free, it includes occupational therapists, and it is capped at six weeks. We continue the work after that, or from the start if intermediate care was never part of the picture, for as long as it's genuinely helping and alongside anything the NHS already has in place.

Let's be straight about the numbers first. Wincanton is 22.3 per cent over 65 and Templecombe 24.6 per cent, against 18.4 per cent for England. Older than average, yes — but not dramatically so, and nothing like Sherborne a few miles down the road at a third. We are not going to dress this up as something it isn't.
What makes this area work differently is the shape of it. Wincanton has a hospital, and that is a genuine advantage. But it has no A&E and no urgent treatment centre, so the moment something needs seeing today rather than next week, you are in the car to Yeovil, Shepton Mallet or Frome.
And the population is spread thin. Templecombe, Horsington, Abbas Combe, Cucklington, Pen Selwood, South Cadbury — these are small places along quiet roads near the Dorset and Wiltshire borders, with very little in the way of buses. A hospital appointment is a planned expedition rather than an errand.
So the people who call us here are usually at the same point. The operation went fine. The ward was good. They are home now, three weeks in, and the exercises have quietly stopped happening because nobody is there to watch and nobody can face the drive.
We come to the house instead. We look at the actual stairs and the actual chair, we work on what is genuinely stopping you, and we keep going for as long as it's helping — alongside whatever NHS or council support you already have, not on top of it.
