Sherborne is an older town than most, and it shapes the work we do here. A great deal of it is falls and balance, rebuilding strength after a spell in hospital, and helping people stay steady on their own stairs. Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.
Sherborne is better served than most towns its size, and it's worth saying so plainly. The Yeatman Hospital, run by Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust, has 30 inpatient beds in The Willows — the Rowan and Beech wards — along with outpatient clinics including physiotherapy. A lot of the towns we cover lost exactly this and never got it back.
But there are two gaps, and both matter when something goes wrong. The Minor Injuries Unit is closed on Fridays and Saturdays. It opens 9am to 6pm Monday to Thursday, and 10am to 4pm on Sunday, and that has been the pattern since April 2022. So for two days out of every seven there is no walk-in care in the town at all.
And there is no A&E. The nearest is Yeovil District Hospital, about five miles north — which means crossing into Somerset and into a different NHS trust, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. It has a full 24-hour emergency department and a co-located urgent treatment centre open 9am to 9pm.
The practical consequence is the one that matters most to us: your operation happens in Yeovil or Dorchester, and then you come home. A hip replacement, a knee, a shoulder repair, a fracture after a fall — the surgery is the short part. The rebuilding takes weeks, and it happens at home whether anyone has arranged for it or not.
Where there is council support it comes through Dorset Council's reablement service, delivered by Care Dorset, with the Prevention and Early Intervention Team as the front door. It is free, it includes occupational therapists, and it is capped at six weeks. We continue the work after that, or from the start if reablement was never part of the picture, for as long as it's genuinely helping and alongside anything the NHS already has in place.

How much does a home physiotherapy visit cost in Sherborne?
A comprehensive initial assessment including treatment is £110 for 60 minutes or more. Follow-up visits are £55 for 30 minutes, £82.50 for 45 minutes and £110 for 60 minutes. A third of Sherborne is over 65. That is not a rounding difference from the national figure of 18.4 per cent — it is nearly double it, and it makes Sherborne the oldest town on our books. In a town of around eleven thousand people, that changes what everyday life looks like and what happens when someone stops being steady on their feet.
The town is better provided for than most places its size, and it would be wrong to pretend otherwise. The Yeatman has thirty beds and runs outpatient clinics including physiotherapy. But outpatient physiotherapy still means getting to Hospital Lane, and for a lot of the people we see, that journey is the problem rather than the treatment.
Then there are the two gaps. The Minor Injuries Unit is shut on Fridays and Saturdays, so for two days a week the town has no walk-in care at all. And there is no A&E — the nearest is five miles north in Yeovil, over the county line and under a different NHS trust.
The villages make it harder again. Yetminster, Chetnole, Leigh, Sandford Orcas, Trent, the Caundles — these are small, scattered and thinly served by buses. Getting to an appointment can take most of a day, and if you have just had a fall or come out of hospital, it often cannot be done at all.
So the work happens where the person is. We come to the house, we look at the actual stairs and the actual chair, and we keep going for as long as it's genuinely helping — alongside whatever NHS or council support you already have, not on top of it.
