Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy & Rehabilitation At Home in Swanage

Physiotherapy for elderly people at home in Swanage, Dorset

Recovering from an operation, a fall or a spell in hospital shouldn't mean a journey you're in no state to make — so we come to you.

Whether it's rebuilding strength after a hip replacement, getting your confidence back after a fall, managing Parkinson's or a stroke, or getting over an injury, our physiotherapists treat you at home in Swanage. We aim to visit within 2–7 days of your call — sometimes the next day — and no GP referral is needed.

Arranging physiotherapy for yourself or for someone you love? Just call Salveo Forma on 07384 590177 and we'll take it from there.

Our HCPC-registered physiotherapists cover Swanage, including Herston, Northbrook and Durlston, and the Purbeck villages of Langton Matravers, Worth Matravers, Studland, Harmans Cross and Corfe Castle. We visit people in their own home, in a care home, or in a nursing home — building a treatment plan around your life rather than a clinic timetable.

At the 2021 Census, 35.5% of people in the Swanage ward were aged 65 or over — more than the 29.6% across Dorset, and nearly twice the 18.4% across England. One in seventeen was aged 85 or over. So a great deal of our work here is physiotherapy for elderly people at home: falls and balance, rebuilding strength after a hospital stay, Parkinson's disease, stroke recovery and arthritis.

We also do a lot of post-operative work here. Planned hip and knee replacements are carried out at the district hospitals, a long journey from the end of the Purbeck road, and the rebuilding after that surgery happens at home — on your own stairs, in and out of your own chair.

Some people need occupational therapy alongside physiotherapy, and most aren't sure which one they need. Physiotherapy rebuilds strength, balance and movement; occupational therapy looks at the practical business of daily life — getting in and out of a chair, managing stairs, washing and dressing safely. Our Swanage team is made up of physiotherapists at the moment, and we are actively recruiting occupational therapists for this area. Call Salveo Forma on 07384 590177 and we'll tell you honestly what would help, and what we can arrange right now. No GP referral is needed.

We provide specialist home physiotherapy visits for:

  • Pre and post-operative rehabilitation — including hip and knee replacements
  • Back pain, joint pain, muscle pain and sports injuries
  • Recovering mobility, strength and confidence after a hospital stay
  • Neurological rehabilitation — including Parkinson's disease and stroke recovery
  • Falls prevention and balance rehabilitation
  • Older People Physiotherapy
  • Rheumatological Conditions

Living Independently at Home

Older adult receiving physiotherapy at home in Swanage

We Help You Live Independently With Confidence, Meaning & Purpose

Whether you're rebuilding strength after a hip replacement, getting steady on your feet again after a fall, or regaining confidence after a stay in hospital — getting to a clinic isn't always possible. We remove that barrier entirely.

Our physiotherapists come to you, delivering expert one-to-one treatment in your home or care home. No hospital car park. No waiting rooms. Just focused, specialist care at a time and pace that works for you and your family.

We treat you as a whole person — not just your symptoms.

If your shoulder hurts because your walking stick is the wrong height, we'll treat the shoulder and sort the stick. A knee problem that started with an old ankle injury gets both looked at. We find the cause, not just the complaint. As a small, close-knit team, we also work alongside your family and carers, making sure everyone involved feels supported, informed and part of the process.

Our clinicians each hold specialist areas of expertise, and we carefully match every patient with the therapist best suited to their condition and goals. From the very first visit, you're in the right hands.

After an Operation or Hospital Stay in Swanage

Where NHS rehabilitation ends, and how we pick up from there.

Swanage has its own community hospital, and it would be dishonest to open any other way. Swanage Community Hospital on Queens Road, run by Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust, has a minor injuries unit open from 9am to 6pm every day, inpatient beds, X-ray and outpatient physiotherapy. For emergencies and most operations, though, you go further afield — to the district hospitals in Poole, Bournemouth or Dorchester.

So the honest question is: with all of that in place, why would you need us?

Because the hospital is where the operation happens, and home is where the recovery happens. A hip replacement, a knee, a fractured wrist or hip — the surgery takes a morning. The rebuilding takes weeks, and almost all of it happens in your own house. A hospital in Poole or Bournemouth does nothing for you at week three, when you still cannot manage your own stairs and the exercise sheet is on the kitchen table.

Outpatient physiotherapy is the other half of it. It exists, and it is good, but it means getting there — and from Swanage, most journeys are long ones. The road out runs through Corfe Castle and Wareham, the bus to Poole takes more than an hour, and the Sandbanks ferry has its own problems: long queues in summer, and crossings that can be suspended in stormy weather. For a lot of older people the journey is harder than the treatment, and appointments get missed for exactly that reason.

NHS rehabilitation at home comes through Dorset HealthCare's Purbeck Integrated Community Rehabilitation Team: physiotherapists, occupational therapists and rehabilitation nurses, usually for up to six weeks, and through a referral from your GP or another health professional.

Where there is council support, it comes through Dorset Council's reablement service: free, short-term help at home after a hospital stay — often just a few days, and up to four weeks. Its teams can include occupational therapists and physiotherapists. We continue the work after that, or from the start if reablement was never part of the picture, for as long as it's genuinely helping and alongside anything the NHS already has in place.

FAQs

Do you provide home physiotherapy in Swanage?

Yes. Our HCPC-registered physiotherapists visit people at home in Swanage, including Herston, Northbrook and Durlston, and in Langton Matravers, Worth Matravers, Studland, Harmans Cross and Corfe Castle. We also visit residents in care homes and nursing homes throughout the area. Call Salveo Forma on 07384 590177 to arrange a visit.

Why would I need a home physiotherapist when Swanage has its own hospital?

Because the hospital is where the treatment starts, and home is where the recovery happens. Swanage Community Hospital has a minor injuries unit, inpatient beds and outpatient physiotherapy, and it is a good service. But a hip replacement takes a morning to do and weeks to rebuild — almost all of it in your own house. Getting to an outpatient appointment is, for many older people, harder than the treatment itself, and from Swanage the bigger hospitals are a long journey away. We come to you instead, and build your programme around your actual stairs, your actual chair and your actual bathroom.

How much does a home physiotherapy visit cost in Swanage?

An initial assessment is £110 for 60 or more minutes, including treatment, and follow-up visits start at £55 for 30 minutes. A 45-minute follow-up is £82.50 and 60 minutes is £110. There are no packages and no block bookings, and the first phone conversation is free.

Can you help after an operation in Poole, Bournemouth or Dorchester?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. After a hip or knee replacement, a fracture or other surgery, we visit you at home in Swanage and work through a programme built around your surgeon's protocol, alongside any NHS follow-up rather than instead of it. If Dorset HealthCare's Purbeck community rehabilitation team has been involved, that support usually runs for up to six weeks — we often start where it finishes.

Can physiotherapy help after a fall in Swanage?

Yes. Falls and balance are a large part of our work in Swanage, where more than a third of residents are aged 65 or over. We assess strength, balance and walking in the place where the fall happened — the stairs, the rugs, the bathroom, the chair you get up from — and build a programme to rebuild strength and confidence and reduce the risk of another fall. Families are welcome to be involved. Call Salveo Forma on 07384 590177 and we aim to visit within 2–7 days, sometimes the next day.

Do you provide occupational therapy at home in Swanage?

Our Swanage team is made up of physiotherapists at the moment, and we are actively recruiting occupational therapists for this area. It is worth calling us anyway, because a lot of what people ring an occupational therapist about — getting safely out of a chair, managing the stairs, reducing the risk of another fall — is work a physiotherapist does too. Physiotherapy rebuilds strength, balance and movement; occupational therapy looks at the practical business of daily life, and the two overlap constantly. Dorset Council's short-term support after a hospital stay can also include occupational therapists, for up to four weeks. Call Salveo Forma on 07384 590177 and we'll tell you honestly what would help and what we can arrange right now.

Which parts of Swanage do you cover?

The whole of Swanage, including Herston, Northbrook and Durlston, and the Purbeck villages of Langton Matravers, Worth Matravers, Studland, Harmans Cross and Corfe Castle. If you are just outside, call Salveo Forma on 07384 590177 and we'll tell you which of our pages covers you.

Can I self-refer in Swanage?

Yes. You don't need a GP referral — call Salveo Forma on 07384 590177 and we'll arrange a visit. There is no need to go through anyone else. We also accept referrals from GPs, hospital consultants and insurers, and many of our clients are arranging care for a parent or partner, which is completely fine too.

Swanage has its own community hospital, with a minor injuries unit and outpatient physiotherapy. That is fortunate, and it is worth saying first.

But Swanage sits at the end of the Purbeck road. At the 2021 Census, 35.5 per cent of people in the Swanage ward were aged 65 or over — nearly twice the figure for England — and almost one household in five has no car or van. The bus to Poole takes more than an hour, there is no regular train to the main line, and the Sandbanks ferry shortcut brings long summer queues and the occasional storm closure.

That is who a home visit is for. A fall at home, a new hip, a spell in hospital that leaves someone weaker than when they went in — and a family, often living some distance away, trying to arrange help quickly.

And running through all of it is the same point. A hospital in Poole or Bournemouth does nothing for you at week three of a hip replacement, when the exercises are on the kitchen table and nobody has watched you try your own stairs. That is the bit we do.
