Salisbury District Hospital, Yeovil District Hospital and Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester are each over twenty miles away. Closer to home, Westminster Memorial Hospital on Abbey Walk provides inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient clinics, X-ray and a minor injuries unit, run by Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust.
Once you're home, short-term support usually comes through Dorset Council's reablement service, an intensive period of help designed to get you back on your feet. It's time-limited — typically up to six weeks — and it works well for many people.
The difficulty comes when that support ends but recovery hasn't finished. Progress after a stroke, a fracture or a long admission often continues for months, and six weeks rarely covers it. That gap is wider in a town like Shaftesbury, where continuing outpatient rehabilitation may mean a twenty-mile round trip you can't yet drive.
